Over 125 Miles In and Still Standing

08/25/2010

Random observations – in no particular order – after a week on the trail:

  • If I could get the folks at Camping World to give me this RV, I’d sell my house and move in. And I hate camping.

  • If I had a dollar for every church I’ve seen on this journey, I could start my own religion. Though I suspect a religion based on whiskey, cigars, and Family Guy would have limited appeal.

  • If I were a dentist, I would set up shop in any one of these small town neighborhood bars and become a millionaire.

  • Speaking of which, don’t read anything into the fact that I’ve tried several of those aforementioned bars. It’s not that I need alcohol every day; rather, I feel a responsibility to those following this blog to explore and share the full small town experience. I am a team player. Not a lush. Team player.

  • If you’re in Berne, you should stop at White Cottage for lunch or dinner. Great folks, and dinner was less than $10.

  • Just passed the 125 mile mark today. That’s about $25 per blister.

  • Does the law of averages apply to weather? It’s been great so far, with no rain and reasonable temperatures. Surely the day will come when 95 degrees and 85% humidity will make me feel like I’m walking through the gates of Hell. I was hoping to put that off for at least another 25 years.

  • Walked through Dublin on the way to Cambridge City and passed the local library. Not saying it doesn’t serve a purpose, but I’d be willing to bet that there are more books in my house than there are in that library.

  • I’ve seem more cemeteries and graveyards on this walk than I have over the course of the rest of my life combined. Either more people are dying in these towns, or other places hide their dead better.

Finished an uneventful day at the Marsh store in Connersville today. Bill Russell and his folks made us feel welcome and fed us dinner. Short trip today (13+ miles), but really boring. Not much to take note of photographically, but you can find a couple of pictures on my Facebook page (Mark Joseph Boyle).

Thursday’s Journey: Connersville to Metamora

Mileage: 18.1 (2,912,912,64 centimeters)

On the iPod: Wanted to download the Bob and Tom Show, but there’s a charge. Sorry, guys…I love you, but not that much. I’ll go with the Brian Setzer Orchestra’s VaVoom CD and another dose of the Dan LeBatard Show, with some PTI thrown in for good measure.
